Progress matters.

Read this quote today and it hit me like a ton of bricks.

I was just thinking about how I haven’t been doing so hot with Optimistic October lately.

(my month-long quest to be more intentional about reframing negatives into a positive, in an attempt to build a discipline — a habit — of constantly seeing the good)

How ironic, right? I was sitting there, berating myself for not doing a good enough job about being positive.

Then, I scrolled across this quote.

Some people call me impatient. I like to say I have a “strong sense of urgency.” (*checkout that reframe! :)) I have these big ideas about my life, or about how we might continue to make progress in society broadly, but the truth is — these things often take much longer than I’d like. The important thing is though — we don’t quit. We keep at it. Because progress… is well — progress!

This quote rings doubly relevant for me today, as I head to some meetings at the National Association of Convenience Store (NACS) Show, to discuss what partners all over the country are doing to make healthy food more affordable and accessible in the convenience store space. I LOVE WORKING IN THIS SPACE. Is the industry perfect? No. Does McDonalds or the convenience store down the street get it PERFECTLY right all the time? No. Of course not. But if we continue to let perfect be the enemy of the good, we won’t make ANY meaningful progress forward. Ever! Progress is messy. It’s imperfect. It always has been, and it likely always will be. And we can be frustrated about that, but considering this is reality — that seems like a giant waste of emotional energy.

Meaningful steps forward should be celebrated. Is it perfect? No. Is it as fast as we’d all like? Probably not. But I love love love working with people who have the courage to sit in the mess. Who show up for tough conversations, who prioritize teamwork and collaboration, and who operate from good values and big hearts for other people.

Excited about the progress I’m making. Each and every day. And I’m also really excited about the progress that the industry is making, inch by inch, to be a part of solutions that create healthier people, and healthier communities.
