This is one of the many ways I showed myself some love today.
Truth is, self-care should happen everyday. I define self-care pretty simply. It’s anything you do to demonstrate…. to communicate to yourself “hey — I actually give a shit about you.” That’s really it. So naturally…. that can look different from week to week, and definitely from person to person.
Sundays for me usually involve cooking a big batch of sort of meal that’s generally healthy and nourishing (and appetizing), so I don’t have to think too much or spend a ton of time cooking during a busy work week. That still happened today. I made a big batch of soup.
But I also got done teaching today, and I was looking out towards the rest of my day and considering the various things I might do to show up for myself and demonstrate to my mind, body, and soul : “hey — I actually give a shit about you… what do you want? What do you need”
So I’m in the car and I’m thinking… “hey girl — whatchu want to eat?”
And my heart… God bless her… she’s always really straightforward and honest… she says: “honey… I want a BURGER.”
So I went to go get a burger. And that’s the end of this story.
I didn’t stress because it wasn’t “healthy.” I didn’t say no, in the name of “discipline.” I said “YES” to something my body and my soul were actually craving, and I refused to feel bad about it. It wasn’t always this way. I wrestled with food once upon a time. And there are still situations where this mentality flares up for me. But what I wanted to communicate today… especially after getting all fired up about this topic yesterday at the conference I spoke at is this….
FOOD IS NOT A MORAL ISSUE. IT WAS NOT MEANT TO BE SOME SORT OF PAWN IN THIS NEVER-ENDING WAR YOU WAGE AGAINST YOURSELF.
Food is just food. Not good. Not bad. Just food.
Food was always meant to be nourishing for your body, your mind, and your soul. And to that end… when you eat… you should take your physical, your mental, and social health into consideration. Don’t make food a life or death issue. It’s just an effing burger. Eat to nourish yourself. Love on yourself. Take care of yourself.
And you know what? Sometimes the best way to do that is to eat a goddamn burger.
