Health is multi-dimensional

Paid a visit to Mickies Dairy Bar this morning, ate my heart out, and don’t regret anything.

For those who aren’t native Madisonians... THIS is a Scrambler.

It’s got “yanks” (basically breakfast potatoes, but think more mashed than crispy) on the bottom, your choice of meat (I chose bacon, obvi), eggs, and then gravy (I get mine on the side).

It’s the epitome of greasy diner food, but like… BETTER.

For the record: I don’t always eat super healthy. Sure, I love big ass salads, totally dig smoothies, and geek out about vegetables — but I don’t eat ridiculously healthy all the time. I prioritize eating well and fueling my body with stuff that makes me feel good and perform well, but when I go out to eat or enjoy some time with friends — I eat what I REALLY want…. not what I “should have” or sounds “just okay.” Life is way too short not to enjoy all the really awesome, less-healthy food out there.

Over time, I’ve figured out a good balance that WORKS FOR ME. A balance that ensures I feel good and perform well, but also get to enjoy and indulge when I want to. Everyone’s balance looks different. Yours should feel freeing and empowering… not restrictive.

It’s also important to note that while my food this morning was glorrrrious… the people I shared this meal with were even MORE amazing. And this is a facet of eating that should never be ignored. Always remember that food was meant to be communal — meals are meant to be shared. Connection and community are good for your soul, and eating can be just as nourishing and important for your social health as it is for your physical health.

Eating in a way that prioritizes your physical health is important. (Duh). But never forget that there are other important considerations too. Laughing with friends, reminiscing with family, every once in a while eating a 10 pound plate of awesomeness that’s smothered in gravy....? These things matter too.

Your health is multi-dimensional. And eating — especially when it’s with others — is just one way we take care of our social, mental, and physical health.
