AUSTRALIA

I left Bali and was off to meet up with a guy I had known for a total of 5 days. To say it was a leap of faith would be a gross understatement, but I tried not to overanalyze it. (After all, “letting go” was a big goal of my entire trip).

We had 5 incredible days together in Vietnam, but was that it? We didn’t know, but both felt we’d regret it forever if we didn’t just see. Unfortunately, because of our situation (we were both traveling abroad and from different countries), we couldn’t just meet up Friday night and go to the movies. We had to take a bigger leap of faith, book plane tickets, roll the dice and see what happened.

I was nervous, sure, but it felt right. That’s all I can really say: it just felt right.

Mickey picked me up at the airport, arriving early, flowers and handwritten sign in hand. Well kinda. I actually ended up walking out the other exit and completely missed him, forcing him to walk out, tail between his legs, amidst a crowd of people that had understandably grown eager to see a big romantic gesture. We were off to a great start.

We snagged a coffee, and drove home to meet his family.

For those of you thinking this sounds pretty full on — you’re right. It was. But that’s also Mickey and I. We’re both, individually, pretty go-getter, all-in kinda people and when we we know what we want… there’s pretty much nothing that can stop us.

The two weeks we had in Aus were spent going to AFL games, camping in the outback, drinking coffee in the Melbourne laneways, and getting to know his family. I don’t doubt they were a little taken aback by the pace we seemed to be moving, but I think when they saw us together… they understood this was something real. And I, on the other hand, was taken aback to learn that not everyone says “goodday mate” every second of every day, that kangaroos are as common as white tail deer are in the Midwest, and that AFL is one of the coolest most badass sports on the planet and I can’t believe America have it.

After 2 weeks, I left for Spain to meet my family for vacation, and Mickey followed a few days after me.

Intense? Sure. But that’s the way we like it.

Next up: Spain 🇪🇸
