Laos

Hannah and I arrived in Laos, and as we moved through immigration, we realized that we had completely forgot we needed a visa. Almost immediately, I broke out in cold sweats. I thought we were going to jail. Long story short: we didn’t.

-

We spent the entirety of our time in Laos in a cute little city, smack dab in the middle of the country called Luang Prebang. On our way to the guesthouse where we were going to be staying for the next few days, it was clear to us that this country was going to be far less developed and touristy than Thailand. Not rough or anything -- just less developed. Hell -- looking back now, Thailand kinda seems like a tourist amusement park compared to some of the other places I traveled last year.

-

One night, Hannah decided we should find some pizza. Having eaten rice for the last 21 days, she was craving a little taste of home. I awoke later that night to Hannah rummaging around the room, in and out of our bags. She said she felt “kinda sick.”

-

I felt bad….. kinda……. for like a whole 20 seconds.

-

And then, I found myself low-key gloating (in my own head, of course) about the fact that I hadn’t gotten sick ONCE this trip. Not once! Evvveeerrryyone else had gotten sick at some point, and I -- iron stomach, stellar-gut-microbiome, probiotic-loving Lauren -- didn’t even felt the slightest bit ill once. Not once.

-

I tried to be a good big sister and help Hannah as much as possible, but this was kind of a solo situation. She took some meds and tried to fall back asleep.

-

Well. About an hour later, I woke up feeling like my stomach was going to jump out of my butt.

-

I got sick. Like really sick. I kept waking up every hour, on the hour to head to the bathroom and took 3 rounds of the meds we brought.

-

I guess karma really IS a bitch...

-

Other (more exciting) adventures in Laos included: spending nearly every morning working remotely at one of the greatest coffee shops in the world, visiting the Kuang Si Waterfalls, hiking to the top of Mount Phousi (pictured here), and eating as much sticky rice as I could shove in my face.

Next up: Cambodia
